What is double eyelid surgery?
Double eyelid surgery is performed to create natural looking double eyelids for patients who do not have a double eyelid in one or both eyes. Dr Fok uses the open technique which involves a cut about 7-8mm above the eyelashes. The results of this technique are permanent. The suture technique has a higher failure rate and the results may not last.
As we age, our eyelid skin tends to droop. Not only does this obstruct our vision, but it also makes us look tired. Correction of droopy eyelids requires more time and work as it involves removal of excess skin, muscle and fat. A procedure similar to that of double eyelid surgery is performed to correct this problem.
What is involved in the pre-operative consultation?
Your needs and preferences will be discussed and various examples of before and after surgery photos will be shown. Dr Fok will discuss with you the type of fold you prefer (round or oval), choice of inner or outer medial canthal fold and the height of the desired fold.
For patients with droopy eyelids, he will assess the eyelid skin laxity and discuss whether an upper eyelid surgery or a browlift surgery is more suitable. Sometimes you may require a combination of both procedures to achieve an optimal result. Dr Fok will demonstrate both of these surgeries to help you in your decision. Our nurses will instruct you on post-operative care.
What happens on the day of surgery?
You will be sedated before the start of the surgery. The operation itself takes about 45 minutes. Your sedation will be lightened at the end of the surgery so that Dr Fok can check on symmetry of the eyelids. Subsequently, an ice pack will be placed over your eyes to minimise swelling. You will then rest in the recovery room for about 2 hours prior to discharge.
How is the recovery period?
There will be some swelling and bruising for a few days to 2 weeks depending on your healing ability. Sutures will be removed after 4 to 5 days. What are the risks?
Risk is small and relates mainly to prolonged swelling and uneven folds.
