EYEBAG SURGERY

Bags in the lower eyelids can make us look tired. This can be worse after a late night out. The eyebags are caused by fat protruding in the lower eyelids. In younger patients without skin laxity, the fat can be removed from the inside of the eyelids without an external scar. In patients with excess skin and eyebags, the surgery is done through a cut below the eyelashes. Excess fat is redistributed in the deep groove below the eyebags and the eyelid skin is tightened.           

What is involved in the pre-operative consultation?

Your needs and preferences will be discussed and various examples of before and after surgery photos will be shown. Dr Fok will discuss with you whether there is a need to do both upper and lower eyelids surgery or just lower eyelid surgery alone. He will also discuss with you whether there is a need to remove excess in addition to fat. Our nurses will instruct on post-operative care.

You will be sedated before the start of the surgery. The operation itself takes about 45 minutes. At the end of the procedure, an ice pack will be placed over your eyes to minimise swelling. You will then rest in our recovery room for about 2 hours prior to discharge.

How is the recovery period?

Recovery used to take 1 to 2 weeks. The amount of swelling and bruising varies with each individual. Dr Fok now uses a new technique which minimise swelling and bruising and our patients are able to get back to work in 5 days time. Stitches will be removed  5 days after surgery. Make-up can be applied once the stitches are removed.
