What is CoolSculpting?

CoolSculpting by Zeltiq is an advanced medical device developed by scientists at the Wellman Center for Photomedicine at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, a teaching affiliate of Harvard Medical School. The CoolSculpting fat freezing procedure is Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved that utilize a proprietary technology called Cryolipolysis which is non-surgical fat reduction technology gently and effectively targets only on fat cells underneath the skin while leaving the skin, nerves, and muscle unaffected. The treated fat cells are crystallized (frozen), then die. In few weeks to follow, the body naturally processes the fat and eliminates these dead cells, leaving a more sculpted body.

Is it safe?

CoolSculpting procedure is non surgical and safe with no downtime as it does not involve any incision or any form of anaesthesia. It uses a non-invasive vacuum applicator to draw in tissue or a non- invasive surface applicator to deliver precised controlled cooling at the surface of the skin. Clinical studies showed CoolSculpting results are noticeable as fat cells in the treated area have been reduced by 20% in one treatment. Additional treatments can further enhance the results by another 20% after 4-6 weeks. A rare side effect is Paradoxical Adipose Hyperplasia, in which the fat in the treated area increase instead of shrinking. It’s incidence of 0.0051%.

What to expect during the procedure?

There will be a sensation of skin suction when the applicator is applied. As the cooling begins during the first few minutes, you will feel pressure and intense cold and this soon will dissipates. You may experience intense stinging, tingling, aching or cramping as the treatment begins. These sensations generally will subside as the area is cooled down and becomes numb. The entire procedure takes just one hour and it is comfortable and relaxing which some patient doze off to sleep.

What are the areas that CoolSculpting procedure can be done on?

What do I expect after the procedure?

Following the procedure, typical side effects include temporary numbness, bruising, swelling, and tenderness can occur in the treated area and it may appear red for a few hours after the applicator is removed.

You may feel a dulling of sensation, some numbness and tenderness to touch in the treated area that can last for several weeks after the procedure.

As CoolSculpting procedure is non invasive, you can get back to your daily schedule immediately for the rest of the day and resume your routine activities including exercises.
You may start to see changes as early as three weeks after your CoolSculpting procedure, and you will experience the most dramatic results after one to three months. Your body will continue naturally to process the injured fat cells from your body for approximately four months after the procedure.
