About

Liposuction is used to sculpt the body by removing unwanted fat from specific areas, including the abdomen, hips, buttocks, thighs, knees, upper arms, chin, cheeks and neck. It is not a means of weight loss. Liposuction can remove stubborn areas of fat that don't respond to traditional weight-loss methods. It is still the gold standard for body contouring as it provides the most predictable and effective result.

Vaser liposuction is an ultrasound liposuction procedure which offers excellent results with fast recovery. In order to make fat removal easier, a special cannula has been developed for liposuction surgery that emits ultrasonic energy. This basically melts the fat, allowing it be removed much easier, especially from any areas that are more fibrous or need a bit more precision. This technique allows larger volumes of fat to be removed with less blood loss and less pain.

What does the surgery involve?

Smaller volume liposuction is usually done on an outpatient basis in our ambulatory surgery centre for reasons of cost and convenience. The surgery is done under twilight sedation combined with local anaesthesia. In cases where larger volumes of fat are to be removed or where multiple sites are involved, general anaesthesia may be required with one to two overnight stay in hospital.

VASER LipoSelection® for liposuction uses ultrasound energy to break up and emulsify fat, but leaves the nerves, blood vessels and connective tissues intact. Small skin incisions, about 5 to 8mm, are made for the insertion of the ultrasound probe through which the "melted" fat is removed.

VASER LipoSelection® is now the preferred technique as it results in better skin contraction, reduced irregularities and smoother contours and most importantly, patients experience less pain, bruising and swelling. It is especially good for difficult areas such as inner thighs, back, under arms, chin and chest.

What happens to loose skin?

Liposuction removes fat only with the use of the VASER LipoSelection technique, the skin also contract and shrinks after fat removal. However, the presence of significant amounts of fat and excess skin is still better managed by operations such as tummy tuck, thigh lift and arm lift.

What happens after the surgery?

You will need to wear an appropriately sized compression garment provided for about 2 weeks. The swelling and bruising is reduced with VASER, and usually lasts 10-14 days. To expedite the reduction of swelling and bruising, we recommend starting a course of lymphatic drainage massage 1 week after the surgery. This also helps soften the tissue scarring below the skin.

When will I see results?

As the swelling starts to subside, you will see initial results in one to two weeks. However, the final result can take up to 3 to 4 months. Liposuction results in a rapid change in your shape but your weight will not change significantly.

When can I return to my activities?

You should be able to return to work after a few days. Light exercises can commence a week after surgery and the intensity of the exercise can be increased according to your comfort level.
